After you’ve filled out all of the initial paperwork, the first step to getting your CDL is passing the tests required to get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). These tests include the general knowledge exam, the Commercial Rules exam, the Combined exam, and the Air Brakes test.
You’ll need to pass each exam and get 80% of the questions correct to qualify for your CLP. A lot of people struggle with these exams, and CDL test preparation is incredibly important to get ready to take them.
Texas CDL Truck Services offers CDL test preparation packets to help. These packets have exactly the same questions that the tests do. All you’ll need to do is study, and you’ll have everything you need to pass your CLP tests on the first try.Learn More
Once you’ve got your CLP, it’s time to start learning how to drive a commercial vehicle. After getting your CLP, you have to wait two weeks before you can take the final skills test. This is the perfect time to practice your driving skills while learning everything you’ll need to know about the exam itself.
CDL Truck Services’ Class A truck rentals and Class B truck rentals are perfect for this time. With each rental, you’ll be assigned an experienced CDL instructor. During your rental, they’ll work with you and ensure that you learn everything you need to know.Get my CDL Now
Once you’re ready to take your test, you’ll need to find a Class A or Class B truck rental. You’ll use this truck to take the test, so it’s a good idea to use one you’ve driven before, and that has been selected to make it as easy as possible to pass the exam.
The fleet of trucks available to rent from CDL Truck Services has been selected to provide our students the best chance to pass their exam the first time. The first step is to fill out all of the appropriate paperwork at your Local TxDOT office. After that, you can get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). To do that, you’ll need to pass 3-4 exams, depending on the license you’re pursuing:
The requirements for a CDL vary greatly depending on the class of license you’re trying to get and whether you’re trying to get an interstate or intrastate license. In general, you’ll need to wait 14 days after receiving your CLP. Then you’ll need to pass the CDL Skills Test.
You may also be required to pass a medical exam. The nature of these tests vary from license to license, but you can find more information about them at the Texas DPS Website.
The final test to get your CDL has three main parts:
Pre-Trip Inspection - During the pre-trip inspection portion, the person administering the test will evaluate your ability to determine the safety of your vehicle. This includes testing your ability to activate the air brakes system.
Basic Maneuvers - During this portion of the test, you’ll drive on a closed course. You’ll be evaluated on your ability to drive, reverse, turn, and park a commercial vehicle.
Road Test - On the final part of the exam, you’ll take your truck out onto the open road. You’ll be tested on your ability to drive in routine traffic conditions.
Each rental includes the rental, a comprehensive review from one of our experienced instructors, and 2 hours at the testing site. Our instructors will help with every portion of the test, including the air brake testing, the pre-trip test, backing skills, and the road test. When you’re done, we’ll make sure you have the knowledge and skills to ace the Texas CDL test.
