The first step is to fill out all of the appropriate paperwork at your Local TxDOT office. After that, you can get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). To do that, you’ll need to pass 3-4 exams, depending on the license you’re pursuing:
The requirements for a CDL vary greatly depending on the class of license you’re trying to get and whether you’re trying to get an interstate or intrastate license. In general, you’ll need to wait 14 days after receiving your CLP. Then you’ll need to pass the CDL Skills Test.

The final test to get your CDL has three main parts:
Pre-Trip Inspection - During the pre-trip inspection portion, the person administering the test will evaluate your ability to determine the safety of your vehicle. This includes testing your ability to activate the air brakes system.
Basic Maneuvers - During this portion of the test, you’ll drive on a closed course. You’ll be evaluated on your ability to drive, reverse, turn, and park a commercial vehicle.
Road Test - On the final part of the exam, you’ll take your truck out onto the open road. You’ll be tested on your ability to drive in routine traffic conditions.
