The first step to getting your CDL is to take and pass the tests required for your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). There are three or four tests you’ll need to take, depending on the license you’re pursuing. You’ll need to pass each with at least 80% of the questions correct.
These tests are not easy, and a lot of people struggle to pass them. To help, we offer CDL test preparation packets and practice tests. These tests have the exact same questions on them that the actual tests have. All you need to do is study, and you’re prepared to pass your CLP exams the first time you take them.Learn More
After you’ve passed your knowledge exams and have your CLP, you have to wait two weeks before you can take the final skills test and get your Texas CDL. This time is perfect to practice driving a commercial vehicle. It’s also the best time to learn about the tests and what they’ll include.
We offer Class A truck rentals and Class B truck rentals. Included with these rentals come one-on-one training with one of our experienced instructors. They’ll help you learn everything you need to know about the test and work with you to develop your driving skills. When they’re finished, you’ll be prepared for your CDL skills test.Get my CDL Now
When you take the final skills test, you’ll need to bring your own Class A or Class B truck, depending on the license you’re pursuing. You’ll take the entire test in this vehicle, so it’s a good idea to bring a truck that’s easy to drive and has good visibility. It’s best if you’ve driven the truck before, too.
Texas CDL Truck Services has hand-selected our fleet of rental trucks to ensure that they’re easy to drive and have superior visibility. We have both automatic and manual transmissions, also. After you’ve practiced and learned in the vehicle, you can take your CDL skills test in it, too. You’ll be primed to pass the test the first time you take it.Learn More
The first step to getting a CDL is to fill out all of the necessary paperwork at your local TxDOT office. After that, you’ll need to pass 3-4 exams to get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). These tests include:
The requirements for a commercial license vary depending on which class of license you’re pursuing. Intrastate and interstate licenses also have different requirements. Generally, you’ll need to get a CLP, train for 14 days, and then pass the CDL Skills Test to get a CDL.
You may also need to pass a medical examination. Depending on the license, the requirements for the exam may be different. You can find out more about CDL medical exams at the Texas DPS Website.
The CDL Skills Test is the final hurdle to getting your CDL. It’s a practical exam that’s overseen at any of the testing locations in Texas. It has three parts:
Pre-trip Inspection - The first part of the exam begins before you’ve even turned the commercial vehicle on. The person administering the test will examine your ability to determine whether or not the vehicle is safe to drive. This includes testing your ability to initiate the air brakes.
Basic Maneuvers - The second part of the exam takes place on a closed course at the DPS office. You’ll be tested on your ability to drive, turn, back up, and park a commercial vehicle.
Road Test - You’ll take the truck onto the open road for the final part of the exam. You’ll be evaluated on your ability to drive a commercial vehicle in common traffic conditions safely.
Each rental includes the rental, a comprehensive review from one of our experienced instructors, and 2 hours at the testing site. Our instructors will help with every portion of the test, including the air brake testing, the pre-trip test, backing skills, and the road test. When you’re done, we’ll make sure you have the knowledge and skills to ace the Texas CDL test.
