Learn MoreThe first step to getting a CDL is to fill out all of the necessary paperwork at your local TxDOT office. After that, you’ll need to pass 3-4 exams to get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). These tests include:
The requirements for a commercial license vary depending on which class of license you’re pursuing. Intrastate and interstate licenses also have different requirements. Generally, you’ll need to get a CLP, train for 14 days, and then pass the CDL Skills Test to get a CDL.
You may also need to pass a medical examination. Depending on the license, the requirements for the exam may be different. You can find out more about CDL medical exams at the Texas DPS Website.
The CDL Skills Test is the final hurdle to getting your CDL. It’s a practical exam that’s overseen at any of the testing locations in Texas. It has three parts:
Pre-trip Inspection - The first part of the exam begins before you’ve even turned the commercial vehicle on. The person administering the test will examine your ability to determine whether or not the vehicle is safe to drive. This includes testing your ability to initiate the air brakes.
Basic Maneuvers - The second part of the exam takes place on a closed course at the DPS office. You’ll be tested on your ability to drive, turn, back up, and park a commercial vehicle.
Road Test - You’ll take the truck onto the open road for the final part of the exam. You’ll be evaluated on your ability to drive a commercial vehicle in common traffic conditions safely.
