Starting in 2022, anyone seeking to get or upgrade to a Class A or Class B license must take and pass Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) courses prior to getting their CLP.
Additionally, those seeking passenger & school bus endorsements must also complete the relevant coursework.
Texas CDL Truck Services offers online ELDT courses at an affordable rate. Study and test from the comfort of your own home with our convenient student portal. When you’re ready for behind-the-wheel training, we’ll be here.

After you’ve gotten your CLP, you’ll have to wait two weeks before you can take the final CDL Skills Test to get your license. This is the perfect time to practice your driving and learn more about the final exam. This will prepare you to pass the exam and increase your confidence when driving a commercial vehicle.
With every truck rental, we include targeted, one-on-one instruction from one of our experienced CDL trainers. They’ll work with you on your driving skills, develop what you need to work on to pass the test, and then prepare you for what the test will include. They’ll ensure you have the experience and the confidence to pass the CDL Skills Test the first time you take it.
Get my CDL NowWhen you take the CDL Skills Test, you’ll need to bring your own vehicle. If you’re getting a Class A license, you’ll need to bring a Class A truck rental to take the exam. Needless to say, being familiar with the truck you take the exam in is incredibly important to ensure you pass the first time you take the exam.
All testing is done in Longview, TX.
When you rent a truck with us, you’ll be using that very same truck you practiced with during the exam. Even better, we’ve hand-picked our trucks. We selected them to ensure they’re easy to drive and have high visibility. They’ll definitely prepare you for success.
Learn MoreAfter you’ve filled out all of the initial paperwork to begin getting a CDL, you’ll need to pass 3-4 exams, depending on the license you’re pursuing. These include:
The requirements to get a license depend almost entirely on the type of license you want to get. Each will be a little different. For all of them, you’ll need to get a Commercial Learner’s Permit by passing exams, wait at least 14 days, and then pass the CDL Skills Test.
You may also be required to pass a medical examination. You can find out more information about the medical exam on the Texas DPS website.
Once you’ve completed everything else, you still need to pass the final CDL Skills Test to get your Texas Commercial Driver’s License. You can take this test at any commercial testing site in the state, and you’ll need to have a CDL rental to take it. It has three main parts:
Pre-trip Inspection - The test begins before you even get in the vehicle. The proctor will look at your ability to determine the safety of a vehicle. They’ll also evaluate your ability to initiate the air brakes.
Basic Maneuvers - This part of the exam takes place on a closed course. You’ll be judged on your ability to drive, turn, back up, and park a commercial truck.
Road Test - For the final part of the exam, you’ll go out on the open road. You’ll be evaluated on your ability to drive in normal traffic conditions.
If you’re looking to start a career on the open road, but you aren’t sure you can afford a truck driving school, Texas CDL Truck Service can help. We can help you every step of the way when you’re getting a commercial driver’s license. Whether you need to get a CLP or a commercial truck rental for your final exam, we have a solution for you.
